Kana’s Island Publishes Over 1200 Issues
Interview by Dr. Sheena Howard with Mr. Joseph Chatman
Can you tell us what Kana’s Island is about and how many issues you’ve published so far?
Kana’s Island is about a group of islanders that have recently and in a hurry, had to leave their original island home. They make their way to a new and unusual island where they hear strange noises in the distance. While the village elders suggest that the Humani tribe should stay together on one side of the island, the temptation for exploration and adventure prove to be too much for the young boy Kana. I’ve published over 1200 issues so far.
What is your long-term vision for Kana’s Island and what is the inspiration behind the storyline?
I’d love to see it turned into a 3D animated series or a 3D animated feature for the family audience. It’s inspired by stories I grew up with like The Wizard of Oz, Alice in Wonderland, and from all of those old Sinbad movies with the amazing locations and creatures! It’s also partly inspired by my own childhood. I was always on the lookout for my next adventure despite others telling me I was too young or too small to accomplish great things.
What has been your biggest challenge with producing this graphic novel? What advice would you have for someone who is just getting started in comics?
The biggest challenge was finding the time and being disciplined enough to do the work when the time was available. I was working full-time for Disney so I was super busy. My advice to those just getting into creating your comic is research other writers, artists, and creators whose work you enjoy. Figure out what makes what they do appeal to you and then try to modify that to create your unique voice.
